Mpika teenager jailed for theft


The Mpika magistrate’s court in Muchinga Province has sentenced an 18-year-old juvenile of Mufubushi village in chief Chikwanda’s area to six months imprisonment for breaking into a building to commit a felony. 

Mpika resident magistrate Musonda Chisha found the named juvenile guilty of breaking into a building and committing a felony, contrary to section 303(a) of the penal code chapter 87 of the laws of Zambia.

In count one, the particulars of the offence are that between 11th and 12th January 2021, the juvenile, whilst acting together with unknown persons, did break into a bar belonging to Rodrick Chilongo and stole assorted items valued at K1,015.

In the second count, the teenager broke into a shop belonging to Alex Bwalya with intent to steal and in fact did steal assorted drinks worth K3, 354.

He was arrested by police in Mpika on January 17, 2021.

The suspect pleaded guilty to both charges and in mitigation, he begged the court to be lenient on him because he is in an examination class and has a medical condition called hernia.

“I have heard that you are a first offender and I have considered the mitigation, I therefore sentence you to six months imprisonment to help you reform,” magistrate Chisha said as he passed judgment on the juvenile.
