Chifunabuli flood victims aided

The Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) has given 2000 bags of Mealie Meal to Chifunabuli residents whose houses collapsed due to heavy rains.

Disclosing the development to ZANIS in the district, Chifunabuli District Commissioner, Hendrick Mwaba said government’s gesture to help the victims is a sign of government commitment towards the wellbeing of the people.

Mr Mwana who described the collapse of the houses as unfortunate said a lot of families have been struggling with poverty and have also been left homeless.

“I am happy that the Patriotic Front government under the able leadership of President Edgar Lungu is committed to serving its people, as government we will do everything possible to address the effects of such calamities,” he said.

He revealed that the donated Mealie Meal will not only benefit the flood victims but also St Joseph’s (Lubwe) Mission Hospital, and Kasaba Hospital.

He said government will not only end at donating Mealie Meal to the affected families but continue rendering help as it will look into the collapsed houses.

Meanwhile, flood victims have described the gesture by government as timely.

Speaking on behalf of the victims Kunda Shiti commended government for helping them as they lost food when their houses collapsed.

“We don’t know how to thank government for this gesture, many of the people whose houses collapsed also lost their food, we don’t know how we would have survived without this help,” he said.

Mr Shiti has since called on government to assist them with tents as they await for the re-construction of their houses as the homes they have sort refuge in have become crowded.
