Govt. recognises growth of media industry as vital to national development


Northern Province Minister Chungu Bwalya says the government attaches great importance to the growth of the media industry as it is a pillar to national development.

The Provincial Minister explained that the Patriotic Front (PF) administration recognizes the vital role the media as a fourth estate plays in national development.

Mr. Bwalya stated that the country has recorded unprecedented growth in the media industry due to the enabling environment that the government has created.

He stated that Northern Province has not been left out as a number of radio stations have been opened under the PF administration.

The Minister has since called on the media across the province to remain diligent, professional and objective as the country goes to the polls.

“I urge the journalists in the province to foster responsible professionalism to effectively contribute to national development,” he said.

Mr. Chungu said this during the commemoration of the World Press Freedom Day in Kasama today.

And Kasama World Press Freedom Day 2021 Interim Organizing Committee Chairperson Emmanuel Banda charged that the media faces a number of challenges in their execution of duty.

Mr. Banda said journalist have continued to face harassments by political cadres in their line of duty.

“Journalists are threatened and harassed when they write something contrary to people’s expectations, forgetting that what the journalists write are not their own views but those of their sources,” he said.

Mr. Banda appealed to political players to caution their cadres against disrespecting media personnel stating that journalists are experienced and highly trained professions. 

He also cautioned journalists against being used by selfish people especially as the country goes to the polls this August. 

Mr. Banda said doing so derails the etiquettes of journalism profession among the media personal.

He also appealed to government to consider extending empowerment initiatives to the men women in the media.

Journalists also paid tribute to journalists who have lost lives in the line of duty, and reminded government of its duty to ensure the media is protected at all times. 

The 2021 World Press Freedom Day was held under the theme:  Information as a public good.
