The Food Reserve Agency (FRA) has announced that this year’s crop marketing season will commence next month. In the 2021 crop marketing season, FRA targets to purchase a minimum of 90,000 metric tons of white maize from farmers countrywide.
According to the Agency Secretary Martha Nalubamba on the FRA’s official Facebook page monitored by ZANIS in Lusaka today, the crop marketing season is set to begin on 1st of May and close on October 31st subject to market dynamics.
Ms Nalubamba, indicates that white maize, soya beans and paddy rice will be purchased from farmers at all the 400 satellite depots dotted in the 105 districts.
“Pursuant to section 22(3) of the FRA Act number 6 of 2020 of the laws of Zambia, this year’s crop marketing season will commence on the 1st of May 2021,” the statement reads in part.
Ms Nalubamba stated that farmers will be requested to deliver their maize to the designated satellite depots when the marketing exercise commences.
The Agency targets to purchase 500 metric tons of paddy rice and 1,000 metric tons of soya beans.
During the last crop marketing season (2020/2021), the FRA was buying a 50 kg bag of white maize at K110, paddy rice at K70 and a bag of soya beans at K150.
For now, farmers await to hear from the agency how much will be the price for the forthcoming crop marketing season.
