Government has reaffirmed its continued support towards the growth of the dairy industry in the country.
Lusaka District Commissioner, Rosa Zulu, says Zambia has the potential to become a major exporter of dairy products to the regional market hence the need to continue to attract investment to the industry.
Mrs. Zulu said this when she received milk and other dairy products on behalf of Mutendere clinic and Chifundo Mission School donated by Parmalat, Dairy Gold and ZAMBEEF yesterday to mark the commemoration of World Milk Day which falls on June 1.
The District Commissioner said this year’s World Milk Day theme; ‘drink milk everyday: innovation and sustainability’ resonates with the government’s desire for all Zambians to drink enough milk in order to improve their nutrition status and health.
Mrs. Zulu said the recent directive by President Hakainde Hichilema for locally produced milk to be sold in supermarkets and chain stores will boost milk sales and promote growth of the local dairy industry thereby creating employment for Zambians.
She said milk is very important, adding that it is the first complete, nutritious and wholesome health food.
She further observed that the presence of milk in the body can help reduce cases of stunting among other ailments.
Mrs. Zulu said through its ambitious 1,000 most critical days programme, the government with the help of the National Food and Nutrition Commission and other partners is making efforts to reduce stunting levels in Lusaka.
And both Mutendere Clinic and Chifundo School managements thanked the milk processors for the generous donations.
Chifundo School Chairperson, Romanos Mpande, said the donation will promote good nutrition among learners at the school.
Mr. Mpande has meanwhile appealed to the milk processing companies to help the school boost its production unit section.
Three companies namely Parmalat, Dairy Gold and Zambeef made the donation of milk and other dairy products worth thousands of Kwacha to Chifundo Community School and Mutendere clinic.
