-A 50 year old man of Kalenga village in Kanyama chiefdom in Mwinilunga district of North-western province has committed suicide after stabbing his former wife with a knife.
Provincial Police Commanding Officer Robson Moonga confirmed the incident in a media statement today and named the deceased as Robert Mulembeta.
“Police received a report of suicide that Robert Mulembeta aged 50 of kalenga village in Chief Kanyama’s area in Mwinilunga district, committed suicide by hanging himself on a tree.” He said.
Mr. Moonga said the incident happened between 23:00 hours on September 22, 2022 and 06:00 hours on September 23, 2022 at Kamongenu village in Katuyola area.
He explained that the deceased followed his former wife Sharon Munjunga at her house where he accused her of having an affair with a named man and threatened to kill her first before killing himself.
Mr. Moonga said the deceased then took out a knife from his pocket and stabbed his former wife on the breast and the sternum.
The Police Commissioner narrated that after the victim was rushed to the hospital by some well-wishers, the deceased decided to take his own life by hanging himself to a tree, thinking that his former wife had died.
Mr. Moonga said police visited the crime scene where they found the deceased body hanging to a tree.
He said the victim, who survived the stab, is admitted to Mwinilunga district hospital and is in a stable condition while the body of the deceased has been deposited in the mortuary, awaiting burial.
