Man caged for assault, robbery

Police in Lusaka have arrested a man of Chibolya compound identified as John Mwanza for assault and aggravated robbery.

Zambia Police Service Deputy Police Public Relations Officer Danny Mwale has confirmed the arrest to the ZANIS in Lusaka today. 

Mr. Mwale said after the apprehension of the 31-year-old commonly known as ‘Konkili’ along Ben Bella extension road, some members of his gang rose against the police and blocked the road.

He said that the gang also attempted to damage property around the area.

Mr. Mwale said the gang failed to rescue their colleague and calm has since been restored in the area. 

“Police officers are currently patrolling the area to make sure that law and order is maintained,” said Mr. Mwale. 

Mr. Mwale said the incident occurred around 11:00 hours today in Chibolya compound.

Konkili is detained in Police custody awaiting to be formally charged.

Brief facts are that on January 2, 2023 around 20:00 hours, John Mwanza while in the company of nine others attacked Henry Soneka aged 37 of John Laing compound and Mathews Chola aged 24 of Lusaka West and took them to Chibolya compound where they assaulted them with a hot wire and a knife. 

The victims sustained burns and cuts on their chests.

Mr. Mwale said that the suspects are also alleged to have stolen a cellular phone and money amounting to K2, 000, from Henry Soneka.

“The matter was reported to police and a manhunt was launched leading to the arrest of ‘Konkili’ today around 11:00 hours,” he said.

Mr. Mwale added police are still looking for the other suspects who are on the run.
