Body of five year old boy retrieved from Musandire River

A combined team of Police and the Fire Brigade have retrieved the body of one of the two five-year-old boys who drowned in Musandire River in Mambwe district in Eastern Province

Eastern Province Police Deputy Commanding Officer Lucky Munkhondya says the two boys of the same family are believed to have drowned in Musandire River when they went for a fishing spree over the weekend.

The Deputy Commanding Officer identified the boys as Mapenzi Ngoma whose body has been recovered and Elesani Ngoma, whose body is still missing.

‘’The body of one of the two was retrieved yesterday while the search for the body of Elesani Ngoma has continued by police, fire brigade and the local people, ”she said.

She has cautioned the local people in Mambwe against fishing due to the river banks which have burst.

“We have received reports that most of the river banks have burst due to floods that the district is experiencing, so people should stop fishing to avoid death,” she explained. 

Meanwhile, Police in the Eastern Province have apprehended a 32-year-old man of Kasinje village in Kasenengwa district for allegedly defiling his 14-year-old step daughter.

Mrs Munkhondya has confirmed to the Zambia News and Information Service (ZANIS) the arrest of Dodia Miti 32, of Ksinje village for the alleged offence.

She said Miti defiled his step daughter last week on January 7, 2023, when he and the victim’s mother went to the field and left the victim alone at home in the morning.

Mrs Munkhondya explained that at around 15 hours on the material day, Miti came back home from the field and found the girl alone inside the house where he forced himself on her.

“The matter occurred last week on January 7, 2023, at 15:00 hours at Kasinje village and was reported on January 12 this month,” she said.

The Eastern Police Deputy Commander stated that while in the process of molesting the girl, his wife arrived home and found him in the act.

The matter was later reported to the police and the suspect who is currently in police custody and is expected to appear in court soon.
