Police arrest Chilufya Tayali for hate speech

Police in Lusaka have arrested opposition Economic and Equity Party (EEP) leader, Chilufya Tayali, 48, of House Number 38 Ngwezi Road in Roma township.

Zambia Police Service Assistant Public Relations Officer, Godfrey Chilabi, who confirmed the arrest of Tayali in a press statement released to the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) in Lusaka today, said this is for the offence of hate speech contrary to section 65 of the Cyber Security and Cyber Crime Act No.2 of 2021.

Mr Chilabi said that Mr Tayali’s arrest is in connection with the recent remarks he allegedly made and posted on various social media platforms where he mentioned some traditional rulers and some commanders from the Defence and Security wings.

He said this occurred between January 1st and 29th 2023.

In another development, police have apprehended Christopher Kapita, 54, a Taxi driver of Lusaka for the offence of giving false information to a public officer contrary to section 125 of the penal code, chapter 87 of the laws of Zambia. 

Mr Chilabi said this occurred on January 29, 2023 in Lusaka.

“The suspects are detained in police custody awaiting to be formally charged,” said Mr Chilabi.
