The Zambia Information and Communication Authority (ZICTA) has urged mobile consumers to ensure that their SIM cards are registered with full details.
ZICTA Consumer Protection Officer Modesta Phiri said there is need for mobile subscribers who registered using their National Registration Cards to also provide facial details.
Speaking when she paid a courtesy call on Nalolo District Commissioner Namatama Mupo, Ms Phiri said the main objective of registering with full details is to curb cases of fraud that are on the increase.
“We have recorded a lot of fraud cases hence the provision of facial details will reduce the number of people being scammed,” she said.
Ms Phiri also disclosed that ZICTA will soon come up with a programme to sensitise women on cyber-crime.
“Women are the most people that are easily scammed on social media, so we shall come up with programmes to educate those concerning cyber-crimes,” she added.
And Nalolo District Commissioner, Namatama Mupo applauded ZICTA for embarking on sensitisation programmes, saying the move will also enable many people to verify if their sim cards are fully registered with all the required documents.
Ms Mupo said it will also provide security to many people that own phones.
“Many people, especially in rural areas are not aware that they need to conduct facial capturing hence such exercises will provide information to everyone,” she mentioned.
The District Commissioner also pointed out that the motive to sensitise women is a good one because they are the most scammed people.
“Women are easy targets because they are vulnerable, therefore such programmes will save most of them,” Ms Mupo said.
She further appealed to ZICTA to speed up the process of mounting communication towers in Nalolo West bank.
“Our District Administration is still under construction in Liliachi area in the west bank and civil servants will shift there once construction work is complete. It is therefore important to speed up the mounting of communication towers for easy communication,” Ms Mupo emphasised.
ZICTA has extended the SIM registration that was supposed to end the month-end of February 2023 to the end of August, 2023.
