Chipata Central Constituency Member of Parliament ,Mtolo Phiri, has handed over 700 desks worth K840 thousand to District Education Board Secretary’s office procured using the 2022 Constituency Development Fund (CDF).
Mr Phiri says the handover of the desks is in line with government’s vision to let any pupil sit on the floor during lessons by the end of this year.
Speaking as guest of honour during the handover ceremony held in Chipata, Mr Phiri said the handing over of the desks was a step ahead to achieving the current deficit of 30,000 desks being faced by the district.
“Education still remains an important tool that can be used to enhance development in the country. It is against this background that I wish to inform you that government remains committed to ensuring that pupils learn in a conducive environment,” he said.
Mr Phiri said the shortage of desks is as a result of the free education policy which has led to an increase in enrollment.
He further urged all the benefitting schools to take good care of the desks and to continue upholding the interests of the community by ensuring that every Zambian is not left behind in the quest to develop the country and raise the standards of the people.
And Chipata District Education Board Secretary (DEBS), Gabriel Chutu, commended the Chipata Central CDF committee for the procurement of the desks and cautioned head teachers from the schools receiving the desks to ensure the properties are cared for.
